When Teena Myers’s new book, Educating Pharaoh, came to me for translation, what struck me as I leafed through its pages was the realization that, no matter how long the night of oppression may last, it eventually comes to an end. The sun of eternal happiness, liberation, and the demise of tyranny rises anew, bringing fresh hope.
Although the Children of Israel endured an incredibly arduous and painful existence under the rule of a tyrannical leader, they were led by Moses and Aaron. They clung to the hope of deliverance and remained steadfast in their devotion to worshipping their God, possessing absolute faith that He was with them.
Although this faith may at times appear to waver, its roots run deep, for God provided tangible proof of His presence at every difficult juncture. He sought to reform Pharaoh by sending a new affliction upon Egypt in response to each broken promise. God’s purpose in sending these afflictions was not to destroy Pharaoh or the Egyptians but to bring about their reformation so that they might acknowledge His divinity. Undoubtedly, our God is the Giver of life; He desires the destruction of no one.
I believe that although this book was written against the backdrop of the Israelites’ liberation from Pharaoh’s tyranny, it also carries a message for the “Pharaohs” of today—those intoxicated by power and authority who fancy themselves gods; those who, wielding their might and weaponry, stifle the prosperity of weaker nations by imposing economic sanctions; and those “Asian Pharaohs” who subject followers of Jesus to the cross of suffering within their own lands, carrying out extrajudicial massacres in the name of religion.
To those whose places of worship and homes are burned, and whose daughters are violated, this book offers courage and hope. Our God stands with you just as He stood with the Children of Israel.
